Abruzzo Bike to Coast and Trabocchi coast

Arrival in San Benedetto del Tronto and check-in. Afternoon free to explore the upper fortified village surrounding the Church of San Benedetto Martire. Highlights include the 14th-century hexagonal Gualtieri Tower ("lu Campanò").

Depart from San Benedetto del Tronto cycling along the easy dirt paths of the Sentina Nature Reserve. Crossing the Tronto River, you reach Point Zero of the Abruzzo Bike to Coast cycleway. The route heads south through coastal towns—Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto Lido, Giulianova, and Cologna Spiaggia—and crosses the protected Borsacchio Nature Reserve before ending in Roseto degli Abruzzi. Optional late afternoon visit to the hilltop village of Montepagano.

Cycle south from Roseto through the lush pine forest of Pineto into the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area (optional entrance to the tower museum). Leaving Teramo province, the route enters Pescara, passing through Montesilvano and crossing the iconic Ponte del Mare bridge to reach Francavilla al Mare. Optional afternoon visit to the Mu.Mi. Museum / Michetti Convent in town, or a short loop into the nearby Teatine hills (Torrevecchia, Ripa Teatina, or Chieti).

Depart south along the Chieti coastline toward Ortona to visit the Aragonese Castle, with an optional stop at the Canadian War Cemetery along the Gustav Line. The route continues through the Acquabella Nature Reserve and coastal tunnels to San Vito Chietino (optional booked visit to the historic Trabocco Turchino, praised by writer Gabriele D'Annunzio). Ride past iconic wooden fishing platforms along the coastal path, with the option for an inland loop toward Lanciano for a winery stop among the vineyards. Before dinner, visit the historic Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere in Fossacesia Alta.

Optional early morning experience: watching the sunrise over the sea by a Trabocco. Depart south from Fossacesia along the most breathtaking section of the Via Verde. Ride along scenic dirt tracks through the wild coastal scenery of the Punta Aderci and Punta Penna Nature Reserve, offering cliffside views of the Adriatic. Continue past historic wooden fishing platforms to the Gulf of Vasto, ascending into Vasto's old town to visit Loggia Ambling (with views of the Tremiti Islands on clear days), Palazzo D'Avalos, and the castle.
