To learn more about this incredible journey and hear anecdotes from a true expert of the Alpe Adria, we interviewed Freddy Mayer.

1. Tarvisio is a crossroads of cultures. What is a unique tradition or festival that combines Italian, Austrian, and Slovenian influences?

"A unique festival that combines Italian, Austrian, and Slovenian influences in Tarvisio is definitely the Feast of St. Leonard. This celebration, held on November 6th, is an example of how the traditions and cultures of these three nations blend in the Tarvisio region. St. Leonard is the patron saint of Tarvisio’s main church, and during the festival, there are processions, cultural events, and gastronomic offerings that reflect the diverse communities of the area."

2. Along the Alpe Adria route, what culinary specialties should visitors absolutely try? Are there typical dishes or drinks that tell the story and culture of the different places visited?

"Every region along the tour has its own specialties. In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, frico, made with Montasio cheese and potatoes, is an ancient tradition. Cjarsons, typical Carnian ravioli, represent the fusion of Alpine and Central European cultures. We can’t forget the famous San Daniele ham and the refined Collio wines produced in the Friulian hills. In Carinthia (Austria), standout dishes include Kärntner Kasnudeln, ravioli filled with fresh cheese and herbs, and Gulasch, a symbol of Carinthian and Hungarian cuisine. Slovenia offers delights like žlikrofi, potato-filled ravioli typical of the Idrija region, and Prekmurska gibanica, a layered dessert filled with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, and ricotta, a symbol of Slovenian pastry tradition. Every dish and drink tells the story of the people who have lived and worked in these lands, creating a unique fusion of Alpine and Mediterranean flavors.”
