A Magical Experience on Board
During our trip, we were joined by four German travel bloggers visiting Italy on behalf of ENIT to share the beauty of these landscapes with their fellow travelers. Our itinerary included Sulmona, Campo di Giove, and Roccaraso—a journey that captivated us from the moment we stepped onto the historic train. The wooden interiors, vintage curtains, and retro ambiance immediately transported us back in time.
As the train departed, we gazed out the window at a fairy-tale landscape: villages nestled among the mountains, breathtaking valleys, and dramatic gorges. Onboard, uniformed train conductors, expert tour guides, and a trio of lively musicians entertained us with live performances and fascinating stories about the railway’s history and the surrounding landscapes.
First Stop: Campo di Giove
A picturesque mountain village, Campo di Giove is perfect for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a festive band playing Christmas carols, leading us into the heart of the historic center. The main square was beautifully decorated with twinkling lights, the scent of cinnamon and mulled wine filled the air, and wooden market stalls completed the dreamy winter atmosphere. After a leisurely stroll and a delicious traditional lunch, we continued our journey to Palena.
Second Stop: Palena
Nestled in the stunning Quarto Santa Chiara area, the Palena train station welcomed us with decorated Christmas trees and stalls offering warm beverages. A local band played cheerful tunes, creating an enchanting experience for our German blogger friends. The festive charm was truly magical. After a brief stop, we resumed our journey toward Roccaraso.
Third Stop: Roccaraso
One of the most famous ski resorts in central Italy, Roccaraso is also a paradise for summer excursions. Nearby, Pescocostanzo—a Baroque gem and one of Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages—adds to the region’s charm. As we arrived, a gentle snowfall created an enchanting atmosphere. Wandering through the quaint streets with a warm cup of mulled wine in hand while snowflakes gently fell around us was simply unforgettable. The holiday lights and fairy-tale ambiance made the experience even more magical.
A Journey to Remember
At the end of the day, we boarded the train for our return trip to Sulmona. The Trans-Siberian of Italy is an adventure everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime!
